Is daily garlic powder in dog food causing my dog's swollen glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Can garlic powder poison my dog when being used in his food daily for years? His salivary glands are swollen badly. Wasn't aware garlic is poisonous to dogs.

The garlic powder is fine especially since you’ve been giving it daily. Dogs need a large dose of garlic to be toxic. The powder doesn’t have a concentrated amount of garlic. The swollen glands are more likely from a cold, dental disease or other infection or allergies. As long as your dog is feeling fine then you can wait a few days to see if they go down. If they don’t get smaller then a veterinary exam, diagnosis and treatment are in order. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dog.
