My dog's armpit is raw from harness. Can I use antibiotic ointment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 63 lbs

When I got Precious from the shelter I was given a harness that didn't have padding on it. I recently bought a new padded one but just noticed in one of her arm pits it's kinda welled up and raw. Do you think it will heal on its own? Also, I don't have the money to buy anything for it this month, but I have original strength antibiotic ointment. Could I put that on her?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely this will heal well with a little help. I would advise putting the antibiotic ointment on once or twice daily and putting a T shirt on Precious so that she can’t lick the ointment off (or lick at the wound, which delays healing). You can use a rubber band or hair tie to remove the slack from her waist area if you want. Best of luck to you and Precious!
