My new mother cat is making a strange noise. Is she feeling safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 8 lbs

Hello Doc, My cat gave birth yesterday but I'm worried because she makes a weird noise like krrrrr. I think she doesn't feel safe because in the place she chose to give birth, you can hear the neighbors dog parking. How am I supposed to make her feel safe doc? Or help her if that's not the case. I'm really worried especially after I read online that the mother kills the children if she is not feeling safe. I also couldn't find a vet nearby to take a look at her, so please help me :(

I don't think the sound you are describing is abnormal. As long as she is eating, drinking, peeing and nursing the kittens I would not worry. I have never known a cat to kill their kittens if they "don't feel safe". I have had them kill them if there is something medically wrong with them though. Just keep her in a calm, quiet area and do not disturb her too much. Just check on her a couple times a day to make sure she is eating/peeing and nursing the kittens. I have been to Bahrain (I am in Afgahnistan now) and I know there are vets there that will examine her if need be. I would not jump to that right now unless she is sick as that will stress her out more. Best wishes.

Cedrica is lovely! It would be helpful to know what exactly you mean by a "weird noise," so if you could please post again with a description of it, that would be great. That way, I or another expert can help you better. As long as she has shelter, food, water, and is warm, she will be fine. She likely gave birth in the cabin because that is where she feels safe, and I would check on her and the kittens daily but otherwise leave them alone. She knows what to do to take care of her kittens. Best of luck!
