Do dogs remember past owners? How do foster homes impact their memory?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 75 lbs

How long will an adult dog remember his original owner of 3 years? Will being placed in several foster homes be detrimental to the dog? Will that effect his remembering the original owner? Will staying with a dog he is “pals” with during movement between foster homes be helpful to the dog in his adjusting to new situations

Unfortunately, there is no way to know exactly how long a dog truly remembers but I believe that some dogs will always recognize their previous owners. I don't think changing foster homes will affect their memory but it could increase his stress. Some dogs tolerate stress better than others but keeping him with his pals will certainly help. I hope this helps!
