Do dogs remember past owners? How do foster homes impact their memory?

How long will an adult dog remember his original owner of 3 years? Will being placed in several foster homes be detrimental to the dog? Will that effect his remembering the original owner? Will staying with a dog he is “pals” with during movement between foster homes be helpful to the dog in his adjusting to new situations. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 75 lbs

Unfortunately, there is no way to know exactly how long a dog truly remembers but I believe that some dogs will always recognize their previous owners. I don't think changing foster homes will affect their memory but it could increase his stress. Some dogs tolerate stress better than others but keeping him with his pals will certainly help.
