My dog's muzzle is peeling after a cut. What can I do until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 4 lbs

My dog’s muzzle appears to be peeling on one side. Two days ago it looked like she had a cut, fresh, red and beeding slightly. Second day looked better and today looks like it’s peeling. She is not itching and she’s playful. Doesn’t show signs of bothering her. Underneath the scabs there is skin, not flesh for sure. Wondering what this can be and what I can do for her until the Veterinary clinic opens Monday

Hello. This looks like a bacterial infection that she picked up. If it is not bothering her much, then I would just pick up some Hibiclens at the pharmacy & gently clean the area a couple of time a day. If it still pretty irritated on Monday, give your vet a call as she may require antibiotics to help it heal. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
