We just adopted Leela 2 days ago and we noticed this on the back paw. We used polysporin yesterday and wrapped it up over night so she wouldn't lick it. Today, we are out and about, so I used isaderm and wrapped it up again. Is there anything else I should do? How long to heal?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You are doing just fine. It looks like she just scraped her pad and the skin above it. It may take up to 3/4 weeks to completely heal. The damaged pad takes the longest to regrow. The skin is not a problem. I would only bandage it a few days and after that keep it unwrapped as long as she isn't licking it. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Poor Maia! It sounds like you have done the correct first aid treatment, although I would avoid using hydrogen peroxide in the future. That's because it can interfere with and prevent wound healing. If you clean it again, use antiseptic soap, it's gentler on the wound. Change the bandage daily, and you may want to put a sock over her paw to keep the area clean and dry. Putting an Ecollar on her may be ideal as well to keep her from licking at the area. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet sore. Keep an eye on the wound, and if it appears, red, swollen, warm to the touch, or there is pus, then it is infected and she will need to see a vet. It can take from a week to 10 days for it to fully heal as long as there are no complications. Best of luck, I hope this helps! http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html

You are right, suturing a pad wound like this is difficult. You’ve done a good job with her care. This is healing well. That is normal scar tissue and the wound does not look infected. There is no need to take her in Monday. Pads take a long time to heal so it may be another week or two before it’s fully healed. If she’s licking it a lot that will slow the healing so use a cone to prevent licking. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Eevee.
