My 10-week-old puppy is throwing up yellow foam. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Schnoodle | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 22 days old | 4 lbs

My ten week old puppy has been vomiting the last couple of hours. She vomited until all that she was throwing up was yellow foam. I fed her again, and she threw that up in about 30 minutes. She weighs about 4 pounds, so I’m worried this could be dangerous for her. She’s been wormed, she’s been drinking water, and she has been acting pretty normal. You can tell she feels bad, but she’s not lethargic.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Phoebe is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Phoebe evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start her on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your girl!

Hi, the occasional vomiting is like a self defense mechanism in dogs. Since Audi has eaten and not vomited after that single episode, it is likely not to have any significance. I would recommend to keep an eye on her, but I would not worry about her having caught anything serious.

In a young puppy that is vomiting I am concerned about intestinal parasites, Parvovirus, and/or ingestion of a foreign body. If Mia has more than one episode of vomiting then I would recommend taking her in to your vet to be checked out. Small dogs can become dehydrated very quickly which can be very dangerous. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
