My cat's tail injured by recliner. Does he need a vet for pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 12 lbs

Hello, I'm in need of advise badly. My cats tail got caught in a recliner today and there's now a bald patch on his tail as well as a red and blood patch where the fur got ripped off. I'm going to put a cone on his head to keep him from licking it. It does not seem broken My question is should I take him to vet or can I simply use the cone? What can I give him for pain management? If anything.

Oh ouch! That looks really painful! I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Topical antibiotics may be needed as well as pain medication. Unfortunately there is nothing safe for pain medication over the counter for cats. I agree that the cone is important to keep him from making it worse in the meantime. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
