Why is my cat meowing constantly? Is it normal or health-related?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 months and 15 days old | 11 lbs

I was wondering if it’s normal for my kitty to meow constantly. He has food toys and attention but he meows day and night. He’s done this since he was 4 months old. My sister has a female cat in her room that is in heat. Could that be the cause? Is he just more vocal than other cats? Her 2 cats hardly ever meow. Everyone jokes that my cat is a “drama queen” because he complains all the time. Is there a way I can tell if its health related? It doesn’t bother me but I want to be sure he’s healthy.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Some cats (just like people) tend to be more talktative than others. A cat in heat can certainly cause a male to be more restless and vocal. For his best long term health I would recommend having Kovu neutered, but being vocal is not necessarily a sign of illness. If he is eating, drinking, urinating and defecating normally, then "talking" may just be his personality.
