Do vet students have to perform declawing, tail docking, euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 6 months old

I want to go to college for veterinary medicine in the future. I have problems with cosmetic procedures like clipping a dogs tail or declawing cats. I dont think Id be able to do either of those things without feeling terrible about it. If I decide to go down this path would I have to preform these types of procedures to graduate? I also would feel terrible about having to put an animal down, but I think I would atleast be able to handle that morally. Any advice?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can choose not to perform these cosmetic procedures. For example, I choose not to perform these. You do not need to perform these procedures in order to graduate. While you will not need to perform a euthanasia to graduate, you will have to perform euthanasia in practice on a relatively regular basis so it is important to be ok with that.
