My old cat's ear hematoma keeps returning. No surgery options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 15 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

What can be done for my cat's hematoma? It was drained at vet, keeps returning, and my kitty is too old (15 1/2) to undergo surgery. He has mid-stage renal failure and a heart arrhythmia, so vet ruled out surgery. The ear was drained 2 days ago for 3rd time in 2 wks, he has been in cone since and on steroids, but it keeps refilling. What is another option? is there a way to compress the ear after draining to prevent refilling? He seems so uncomfortable, I want to help him. Any suggestions??

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this with Milo. Aural hematomas can be a challenge to manage. I have frequently bandaged ears after draining to prevent them from refilling, but the only way to do this is to bandage the entire head. Some animals tolerate this and some do not. Another trick that I have tried over the years is a Chinese herbal combination to prevent bleeding called Yunnan Bai Yao. Your veterinarian may carry it. So, I would ask your veterinarian about draining the ear again, bandaging it to the head for compression, and maybe adding Yunnan Bai Yao. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
