My dog has a bloody, bruised eye. Should I go to the vet or use OTC?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 67 lbs

my 3 yr old pitbull bit another dog and i had to hit him on the head to make him release. Now he has a bloody eye. He isnt pawing at it or anything. But is is bloody at the bottom and bruised around the eyelid. Cant really afford the vet right now unless its an emergency. Im sure the vet will prescribe some type of eye drop. What should i do? Are there any eye drops i can buy over the counter?

Hello, Unfortunately, there are no over the counter drops that would benefit Stacks. I would apply an E-collar to prevent him from scratching at the eye and monitor the eye for changes in size, discoloration or discharge. If you notice any of the aforementioned symptoms, I would advise you to get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
