My cat has lungworm and fatty deposits. Why is her poop orange?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 32 lbs

My cat Phoebe has lungworm and fatty deposits in her lung. Can fatty deposits be caused by lungworm causing malabsorption of food and orange poop. She is currently on milbemax and her sneezing and runny nose are much better but her poop is still orange.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Hamartomas in the lungs, are primarily comprised of muscle, connective tissue and fat and are typically not caused by lungworm. Fibrous lesions of inflammation and scar tissue can develop from migrating lungworm though. Malabsorption is typically not a problem in lungworm cases as they primarily reside in the lung tissue causing exercise intolerance, coughing, etc. I would suspect the orange discoloration of the feces is likely a separate problem. I would recommend monitoring Phoebe for the time being and consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora to the food, which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. If the stool worsens, I would recommend having Phoebe looked at by her veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made.
