My senior dog spits up food and has a disappearing mouth growth. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | 24 lbs

Hello, my 16 year old jack russell has recently and frequently started regurgitating her food (though consumes it again thereafter). Noticed a pink, sausage shaped growth hanging out of side of her mouth today, which disappeared a few minutes later. She is drinking and eating happily, doesn't seem in pain. Vet closed today. Can you advise what may be going on? Many thanks. Rachel

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. From your description, it sounds as though Dee may have an oral tumor that may be extending into her esophagus with it's sausage shaped appearance. Unfortunately there is not much you can do at home apart from offering soft food or liquified food to make it easier for her to swallow. Once the vet opens up, I would get her seen right away so that you can get an answer on what this could be sooner rather than later. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
