My dog ate a cayenne pill. Will she be okay? What should I watch for?

My dog ate one of my cayanne pills. I got it out but the pill opened and she ingested about a fourth of the 450mg pill, will she be ok? She seems fine now but it just happened. She’s about 16 pounds (overweight small dog)

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would not be too worried about this. The most that would happen would be that Nudge would get an upset stomach. An upset stomach can lead to diarrhea and vomiting which are usually self-limiting (meaning they will resolve on their own within 12-36 hours). If she begins showing any signs of an upset stomach that don't resolve in that time period then you should take her to your vet for treatment. Capsicum (cayenne) is not toxic to dogs. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oral and GI irritation are likely the only side effects you will see. I'd offer Nudge some cooked white rice or a piece of plain bread to help absorb and dilute whatever did get swallowed. To be safe you can also give a dose of pepcid AC (Famotidine) 5-10mg tonight and tomorrow morning. I think it's very unlikely, but if you note serious vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite, or any other concerns, take Nudge to see your vet right away. Best of luck to you and Nudge!
