What to do if my cat's paw abscess isn't bursting? How long to wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 7.3 lbs

My cat has an abcess on the main pad of her right paw. I took her to the vet 2 days ago and she is now on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. If the abscess doesn’t burst and drain by itself I was told she would need to go under anaesthetic and have it lanced. How long should I wait until this becomes my only option? Is there anything else I can do? Since she’s been on medication, her appetite has come back, but she is still walking around on 3 legs.

If your cat lets you do it, you can bathe her paw in a warm epsom salt solution twice a day. This should help ripen the abscess. Since I have not seen the abscess, I cannot tell you , how long it should take until it bursts, but I think by the latest on Monday, it should have opened.
