Why does my senior dog lie in the woods for hours after going out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Female | spayed | 16 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

My dog is acting odd. Instead of going outside, doing her business and coming right back to the door, she walks off into the wood and just lays. Not far into the woods, she can see our house, but will lay in the woods for hours unless we go and get her. Then she is happy to see us and comes back with little coaxing.

This does sound like strange behavior but if Sasha is otherwise acting normal I would not worry to much about it. She may be just enjoying the changing of the seasons or, due to her age, she may not be able to walk around as much due to arthritis. If Sasha stops wanting to eat or her bathroom habits change then I would be concerned. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
