Is it normal for my cat to sniff and lick shoes from outside?

So I have a random question, my cat, pepperoni is an indoor cat, and always has been. He has this strange thing of sniffing the soles of your shoes when you've come in from outside. So much so that he will rub his face up against them, lick them and do the brain freeze style face. Is this something I should be worried about or is it just him enjoying the different smells of the outdoors? Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9.5 lbs
