Is it normal for my cat to sniff and lick shoes from outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9.5 lbs

So I have a random question, my cat, pepperoni is an indoor cat, and always has been. He has this strange thing of sniffing the soles of your shoes when you've come in from outside. So much so that he will rub his face up against them, lick them and do the brain freeze style face. Is this something I should be worried about or is it just him enjoying the different smells of the outdoors?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While this behavior is certainly unusual, it is not likely to be related to anything concerning. As long as he continues to do well with a good activity level and appetite and no vomiting or diarrhea or weight loss is noted, he is likely going to be just fine. Good luck and have a great day!
