Is puppy food bad for my dog's joints? What should I feed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 1 day old

My mini golden doodle is 2 months old. I am currently feeding her NuVet wafers (1/2 per day), Companions choice pre and probiotic paste, and TLC food for dogs. My breeder mentioned she should be eating the TLC dog food rather than food for puppies as it is dangerous to her joints (with puppy food, she can grow too quickly for her joints to handle). Is this correct and valid advice? Should I be feeding Zoey puppy food to meet her high protein needs?

Hi, thank you for using Pet Coach. In the past it was thought puppy foods may have caused joint problems in larger breed dogs. However, puppies do require a different balance of protein and minerals than adult dogs. I strongly recommend feeding puppy food for all breeds of puppies. Depending on Zoey's projected adult size she should get a growth formula based on her size. Royal Canin has breed specific nutrition lines. https://www.royalcanin.com/breed?utm_campaign=Brand_Royal+Canin_Breed_Phrase&utm_medium=Paid_Search&utm_source=bing&utm_content=cpc&utm_term=royal+canin+breed+food&gclid=CLG2odKQktoCFakRfwod-ykMvw&gclsrc=ds
