My dog is coughing after vomiting and diarrhea. Is it pneumonia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 24 lbs

On Sunday (today is Thursday) he didn't eat breakfast, so I gave him a treat around midday, and went out. When I came back shortly after he had vomited multiple times, and this continued every time he ate or drank. So I withheld food for 12 hours and gave him water sparingly. He ate on Monday, but that night he had diarrhea and on Tuesday he wouldn't eat at all. The vet said it was bacterial, IV'ed him, and gave me antibiotics. But today (Thursday) he suddenly began coughing when excited.

I am sorry to hear that Bailey hasn’t been feeling well. Anytime I have a patient who is coughing a few days after vomiting I worry that they may have aspiration pneumonia. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian soon. Hopefully he does not have pneumonia, but it is a fairly common problem after vomiting events. Best of luck and I hope Bailey improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
