My senior dog was diagnosed with bone spurs. How do I manage his pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 10 months old

My dog Bean is nearly 8 years old and feels pain when we touch him recently. I found him lying on the ground all the time. I took him to the vet he told me Bean is suffering from bone spurs. Here is his CT. We gave him Previcox and he is now getting much better, wanting to play with us. I’m wondering is this a really bone spurs? How should I treat him?

I see an x-ray and not a CT, but this does show signs of spondylosis deformans in the vertebrae. A way to describe the arthritic changes in the bone is to call it bone spurs, so I agree with the diagnosis. The fact that the Previcox made him feel better is good evidence that the correct diagnosis was made and appropriately treated. Considering this, I recommend continuing to follow the treatment plan that your veterinarian gave.
