Pet's info: Dog | English Setter | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 75 lbs
Hi, I’m babysitting my friends 10 year old English setter, he’s sleeping right now and breathing quite fast 66-68 breaths per minute. Besides that he’s sleeping comfortably and doesn’t seem to be in pain. Should I be worried?

It is possible that he has an underlying heart condition if his breathing continues for consecutive days in a row at this rate. I would recommend alerting his owners of this abnormal breathing so that they are informed. They may have already witnessed this themselves or may even be aware of a condition he has already. However, you are right to inquire about this, because breathing rates <30 breaths per minute while in a deep sleep are considered abnormal and the #1 cause of this is an underlying heart condition and potentially heart failure. Best of luck with Cody and informing the owners of your concerns for his overall health and well-being.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. That is a bit fast. Check his gum color. They should be a nice pink (like your own gums). If they are any color other than that, you need to take Cody to the emergency vet clinic. You also need to see the emergency vet if Cody has any history of a heart murmur, is not eating, seems lethargic or weak, or seems to be working hard to breathe when he is awake. Otherwise, get in touch with the owner and see about scheduling Cody for the first available appointment at his regular vet. Best of luck to you and Cody!
