How to help my fat-tailed gecko breathe with a facial wound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My fat tailed gecko is having trouble breathing. I believe his facial wound he got from being fed improperly has healed over a nostril or part of them. He chirps randomly, and I notice he is eating less. He won’t lay his head down when he sleeps. How do I help him breathe better, and how can I help this wound heal?

He should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. If there is infection, antibiotics will be required for treatment. Gently clean the area daily with a cotton swab and some diluted betadine or Chlorhexidine (Hibiclens). Use paper towels as substrate and change daily to prevent contamination. Provide a moist hide (at least 60% humidity) for him within his enclosure as well. Consider increasing temps slightly to aid in recovery
