Why is my purebred Pomeranian so much taller than her small parents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 1 year and 10 months old | 12 lbs

I wonder why my Pomeranian is taller than her parents, her parents are pure breed Pomeranian with pedigree, so I don’t understand why she is not small like her parents

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This happens for the same reason that two short people can have a tall child. There may have been a larger dog in the family tree somewhere and your Shakira happened to get those genetics. Also, are you certain her parents are who you think they are? Is it possible there was an accident and there is a different father than you thought? Either way, Shakira is beautiful and looks healthy and that is what's important!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Shakira sure is beautiful! Height is directly related to genetics. Even in humans you will see relatively short parents sometimes with tall children. Sometimes height skips a generation meaning that one or more of the grandparents (or even great-grandparents) may have been taller and passed a part of that gene down to the each parent. Those parents coming together to make babies probably each passed that part of the gene to Shakira making her taller. It is not really that strange of a phenomenon. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
