Puppy not eating, stomach gurgling, and gassy. When to see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 3 months and 12 days old | 15 lbs

Jack didn’t eat dinner and i can hear his stomach gurgling from across the room (and he’s got some gas). When should I be concerned that this is more than an upset tummy? No diarrhea that we’ve seen.

An upset stomach is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Jack has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can try feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.     I am sorry to hear that your puppy is sick. The gurgling you hear in his stomach is probably a mixture of the food being processed, gas/gas bubbles, and possibly a little bit due to hunger. Once the diarrhea starts to clear up you can begin introducing puppy food, in small amounts, back into his diet. You could also try feeding him some plain boiled chicken and rice as this is very easy on the digestive tract. Feeding smaller meals more frequently may help his digestion and cut down on the sounds you are hearing from his tummy. If the diarrhea continues despite the medications you are giving him, or if he starts vomiting, then I would recommend taking him back in to the vet for a recheck. Best of luck!

Hi Si! Congrats on your new puppy Sharas. Intestinal worms are very common in young puppies, and that could be the cause of his diarrhea and having to poop as often. Lots of worms can cause gas and a big belly as well. I'm not sure if he has been dewormed, but if he has not, he will need to be as soon as possible. I recommend Panacur, which you can get at a pet store or your vet's clinic. It's a three dose course of treatment, and you will need to give another course of treatment two weeks after the first finishes to kill all the worms. He should then be dewormed monthly until he is six months of age, and after that should get a deworming treatment every three months. His food could be a source of his problems as well if you have changed his diet from what he was having previously. He should only be eating a high quality puppy formulated food, but you can try a home remedy to see if that helps his issues. Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat c

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Deworm him if indicated. If he is behaving normally otherwise, continue with the bland diet until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to the regular diet. A veterinary probiotic, such as ProStora, ProViable or FortiFlora, may promote a healthy gut. If the symptoms persist or if Patches develops lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite or abdominal pain then see your veterinarian.

I have a new puppy and she hasn't been eating. Today her stomach is gurgling and will not eat.
HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Miko! Since Miko is so young and hasn't been eating I recommend you have her seen sooner than later. Puppies that young can deteriorate quickly. If she is not up to date on vaccines, parvo is a concern. But it could be other viral or bacterial infections, food intolerance, ate something that isn't agreeing with her, intestinal parasites or a foreign body. Try offering her something yummy like boiled chicken or hamburger with rice or some meat flavored baby foods. If she continues to not eat, starts vomiting or having diarrhea or is lethargic she needs to be seen. i wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery for Miko

Poor Jack! These are very concerning signs, especially in a puppy this age - I would be very concerned that he may have a serious illness such as parvo, or an intestinal obstruction due to something he may have swallowed. I would recommend taking him to the vet immediately for an exam, as this may be a life-threatening problem - the vet can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

It appears that Bebe is having some form of gastrointestinal irritation. This can definitely make a dog feel nauseous and stop eating. If Bebe has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. My German shepherd puppy is about 4 months old and for 2 days now he doesn't want to play or eat he just will lay down all day. He drinks water but I'm worried about why he's not eating. He's had a little bit of diarrhea as well.
It sounds like your poor pup has a touch of gastroenteritis which is basically an upset tummy. It is pretty common in puppies and can be caused due to eating something yucky, bacteria, worms or viruses. Make sure the pup is wormed firstly. Then I would try starving the pup for 12 hours, followed by plain rice and chicken and gradually reintroduce his own food. If he starts to vomit or stops drinking go to the vet asap in case something more serious like a blockage is occuring. Likewise if he doesn't start to improve go to the vet as he may need an antibiotic.

I would recommend that Jack get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. If he can't keep down fluids he will become dehydrated very quickly. He may have stopped eating while you are gone because he missed you, but it might have also been a coincidence in timing and that is just when he started showing signs of illness. Vomiting and lethargy in a puppy can be caused by dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection (such as parvo virus), among others. After a thorough medical exam and questions on his vaccination history, the vet may recommend diagnostics such as bloodwork, parvo testing, or x-rays to see what could be causing his illness.

10yr coton de tulear, otherwise great health, ate grass and vomited wednesday night. I woke up Thursday morning to diarrhea on the floor, but she was eating regular food and treats and acting normal. however late Thursday night she had diarrhea again
Poor girl. These symptoms are suggestive of an internal illness (i.e. bacterial infection, kidney disease, liver disease, etc) for sure, and therfore its best to get Jace seen by your vet as soon as they open. If you can get her seen within the next 12-24 hrs, then that should be suitable enough. Continue to monitor her gums (should be nice and pink, if pale then it is an emergency), breathing (shortless of breath is an emergency) and energy level (severe lethargy and unresponsiveness is an emergency) for now. I hope that Jace is able tot get seen and can recovery from her illness soon! Best wishes and take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Grizzly. It sounds like he is experiencing some gastrointestinal you upset based on your description of his stool and decreased appetite. It is generally safe to fast a large breed dog for 24 hours to allow the GI tract to rest. Be sure to provide plenty of water though to prevent dehydration. This will typically resolve mild cases of GI disease. If this does not help or he develops vomiting or blood in the stool, then you will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
