Why is my beagle's tail lesion not healing and getting worse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

Our 8 yr old female beagle has an ulcer/ lesion on the end of her back/base of tail, about two in long by 1 in wide with pus and few drops of blood. We put a cone on her, then tried Vetericyn 4 x day for a month with no change. So now we have been rinsing, then putting .04 Chlorhexadine on it 1 x every few days, rinsing again. No improvement. It seems to be getting larger and deeper. And now her nose is warm. She is still eating a lot and going out to urinate, but she is laying down more.

I am sorry to hear about Soya. This lesion appears to be quite deep /extensive and I do not think that topical therapy alone will be sufficient to treat this. I would recommend getting Soya to a vet as soon as possible. They can shave around the wound and clean it/debride any tissue that is not healthy. Depending on the appearance in person they may also recommend a biopsy of the area. They can prescribe systemic antibiotics and she also may benefit from anti-inflammatory medication/pain relief. I would get her in as soon as possible based on the appearance in this photo. Best of luck to you and Soya.
