My dog's collar caused a neck bump. Is it from rubbing or scratching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old

I noticed my chiweenie's collar was irritating his neck, some of the fur looks as if it's been rubbed away. I remove the collar when he is inside now but, two days ago he started scratching at his throat & had caused a little sore it looks as if it's healing now but when I touched it today it almost felt like a bump. Can a collar rubbing cause a bump or possibly his scratching cause it? The bump itself is flat, & on the skin. Not attached inside or loose & rolling around. Possibly a thick scab?

The rubbing collar can set up inflammation and an environment for bacterial or yeast infection. The itching can cause inflammation that could cause something like a bump. I would recommend that you have Chester examined by a vet to see what exactly is going on. The vet may recommend anti-inflammatories or antibiotics or topical medications depending on what is really going on. Until Chester sees the vet, the best thing you can do is to keep him from scratching, so he may need to wear sock or pet shoes or a shirt that covers the area.
