My puppy gets distracted outside. How to make her potty first?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 months and 10 days old | 50 lbs

My puppy is fully potty trained now and I’ve taught her to ring a bell to go out. However, whenever I let her out she gets distracted from going potty and tries to run around, sniff stuff, chase bugs, basically everything but potty. The only way I can get her to go is by putting her on a leash first and following her out there, then taking it off after she goes so she can run around. Is being distracted something she’ll grow out of or is there anything I can do to make her go before playtime?

This is something that Harley may eventually grow out of as she gets older. I think what you are doing by taking her out on a leash first is good. You can try offering her treats if she goes off the leash to reinforce that behavior.
