My old dog's eye growth is open. How to clean it to prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 19 years and 1 month old | 8 lbs

Jack has had this mole/growth by his eye for over a year, but recently he keeps breaking it open when he washes his face. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to be painful for him, but I’m concerned about a gaping hole by eye, and infection. I have an antibiotic for him, but it make him throw up, and he’s old so I don’t want him dehydrated, and I stopped giving it to him. Otherwise healthy. Can’t get in to the vet until Monday. Any suggestions on cleaning it? Or any other suggestions? Thank you!!

Poor Jack! Use some cool water to clean it, but don't use any soap as it could get into his eye and cause irritation. Put an Ecollar on him to keep him from rubbing at it. You can make one at home, or buy one at a pet store. I hope this helps!
