My dog has a cancerous head lump. What to expect from surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old | 30 lbs

Hi, my beautiful staffy cross Bailey has had a lump on her head for over 3 years. Our first vet said there was nothing to worry about as it wasn’t ‘attached’ to anything. We didn’t have it removed because we couldn’t afford the procedure (£300+!) We recently signed up with the PDSA, had her checked up and it turns out it is cancerous, to be removed this Monday. I am so so worried about the procedure and the vet who had seen her didn’t give me any reassurance. I’d love some information. Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. It is good that her new veterinarian properly diagnosed the mass. Most aggressive types of skin cancer grow very rapidly. The fact that her mass did not, is a good sign. Furthermore, it is also good that the mass is not attached to deep underlying tissues. This will make the removal easier. It is will also make it more likely for the mass to be entirely removed. I recommend having the mass submitted to a pathologist for review after it is removed. This is will give you an accurate diagnosis and what you expect for her going forward. I hope this information helps. Good luck!
