My cat is licking sores on his tail and penis. Should I call a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 22.5 lbs

My cat has been licking its backside in two spots; one at the base of his tail and one next to his penis. We have put neosporin on the sores and he’s wearing a cone, but even with the cone on he can still lick his tail sore. Should we get a bigger cone, put a different cream on his sores, or have it checked out by a vet?

That looks like it should be seen by your vet. Treating the underlying problem that is making him itch or sore in those places and encouraging his licking is important so hopefully this won't happen again. Your vet will do an exam, possibly look at some cells from the lesions under the microscope to see if they can determine what the cause may be, and based on those results will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.
