My kittens have diarrhea. How to tell if I'm overfeeding or underfeeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 0.5 lbs

I am following feeding charts with five 17 day old kittens. I am trying to feed 11 ml every 3 1/2 hours. They are gaining about 10 grams a day. Two are pooping brown solid stools. Three of them however have diarrhea that is grayish and smells. I read that it could be overfeeding. How do I know if I am overfeeding or underfeeding if feeding charts aren't helping?

The guidelines you are following are just that, guidelines. There is no amount that is an exact amount to feed each and every kitten. You will need to adjust accordingly. As long as they are not losing weight you are probably feeding enough. If you want to cut back a bit on the those with diarrhea you can do that and see what happens but if they start to lose weight you will need to increase it again. It may also be the formula that is causing the problem. Watering it down more than the label recommends sometimes helps. The most common cause of diarrhea in young kittens in intestinal parasites. Kittens can be dewormed as early as two weeks of age so you should talk to your vet about doing that. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
