My snake has an orange spot after shedding. Is it scale rot or injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Kingsnake | Female | 2 years and 4 months old

Does my snake have scale rot and if so, how do I treat it? She shed today and this was not there before. Is this super dangerous, or will it go away? She shed in all once piece except for a flap on her face. I took it off and there’s was that tiny orange area you can see in the photo. It reminds me of an old scab?

It doesn't look like rot, but looks can be deceiving. It could have been caused by some trauma or a rough shed. You should never pull a shed off. Let it fall off on its own or soak/mist to make it easier to shed. Monitor the spot for redness, swelling, discharge, bleeding or if it begins to spread. You can dab it gently using a cotton swab and a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. If it doesn't improve, see your veterinarian.
