Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 5 days old
Bob - our rat - has been having what seems like breathing issues for a couple weeks on and off. He’s making a sound similar to what you’d hear on an ultrasound listening to a baby’s heartbeat (as best I can describe it) but no other physical changes (sleeping more, etc.). 2 questions - Is there hope that this can be remedied? And can a “regular” dog/cat vet address this or is this something for a more specialized vet?

Thanks for reaching out about Bob. The most common cause of respiratory problems in rats are mycoplasma. Response to oral antibiotics is fairly good, but often difficult to totally clear with potential relapses. But treatments often improve quality of life. You would have to contact the local veterinarian for experience. Good luck.
