Why is my cat throwing up clumps? Hairballs or medication side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Greg is FIV + and has a metastatic intestinal cancer. He recently started Palladia and Prednisone. The other day he threw up this mass of tissue. It was several thick clumps. What could this be, and does it mean something like a serious side effect? I'm trying to get a hold of his vet, but I have not heard back.

I am sorry we didn't answer your question sooner. Hopefully you have heard from your vet by now. The tissue in the picture is actually a couple of hairballs. I would recommend talking to your vet about what may be the best option for preventing additional hairballs (medications, dietary change, shaving the hair, etc).
