Why is my Chihuahua stumbling, skittering, then suddenly sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

Hello, my Chihuahua is acting strangely. Suddenly, he does not seem to be able to stand up, and when I put him on the ground he skitters and jumps around very quickly. Obviously, I did not want to make him keep doing this, so I put him on my bed. After about a minute of jolting, he leaned over and fell asleep. He is now asleep and breathing normally, and does not look to be in any discomfort. In the past, he has ingested marijuana, some of the symptoms look familiar but not to this degree.

Sorry we couldn't get to your question earlier! Hopefully Carlos is back to normal now. Marijuana toxicosis can have a variety of signs based on how much was ingested and if it was an "edible." It does sound strange. If he continues the behavior after waking up, then evaluation by a vet is indicated. I would be concerned about possible neurologic disease, hypoglycemia, or heart or lung disease.
