Why is my cat wired, restless, with dilated pupils after vet meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 14 years and 11 months old | 6.7 lbs

I took my cat to an emergency vet today because she couldn't eat due to periodontal disease and she was having pain so she couldn't eat or groom herself. She is 15years old weighs. 6.7 pounds. She is otherwise healthy and not on any meds. Vet gave her a Buprenorphine injection up to 1ml. Which lasts 72hrs. And a convenia injection which lasts 3 weeks. My issue is 10hrs after visit. My cat has dilated pupils is active seems wired. Is affectionate but won't nap or sleep. I'm worried.

I am sorry we couldn't get to your question earlier. Hopefully Sitara is back to normal now. The symptoms you have described are consistent with opioid use (which is what Buprenorphine is). I would not be overly concerned. I am more concerned about her dental disease and the plan to treat that, since the pain medications and antibiotics won't fix that particular problem. She needs a full dental cleaning under anesthesia and may need her teeth extracted if stomatitis is a concern. https://www.petcoach.co/article/gingivitis-and-stomatitis-in-cats/
