My puppy is scratching his ear, has red spots and gunk. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 3 months and 11 days old | 33 lbs

Looks like my puppy has been scratching at inside of ear. His right ear has red spots on the inside. It's hard to see, but there are 2 spots, one closer to the middle of the head, and 1 near the bottom edge closer to side of head Could he have an ear infection? This ear also has more dirty gunk inside than the other one.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Momo is so cute! If he has been scratching at one ear a lot, and there is more discharge in the ear than the other, then yes I would suspect he has an ear infection. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose if he does have an ear infection, what's causing it (ear mites, yeast, or bacteria), and can prescribe treatment for it. I hope this helps!
