What deadly health conditions are Dachshunds prone to developing?

What health conditions are fatal to dachshunds that I should watch out for? Are there any? Are they prone to any deadly diseases? (example heart failure..)

Great question! Dachshunds are very prone to back problems, specifically intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). This can happen acutely or chronically. They can be prone to bloat due to their deep chest. They can also be prone to patella luxation, cataracts, glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy, corneal dystrophy, obesity, and skin problems.

    Other common problems include elbow dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), urinary problems, cataracts, dry eye, and allergies. Allergies can be a common problem in this breed.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco. Dachunds are genetically prone to IVDD or "slipped" disc due to their long backs and type of cartilage between the vertebra. Trying to limit jumping, walking on hind legs and making sure Oscar is trim and slim can all help reduce his risk of disc disease. What is the number one reason a dachshund dies? ( example, cancer...)
Honestly, dachshunds are pretty hardy dogs. If they can survive without ever needing back surgery for herniated disks, I believe that most just die of old age. They are not particularly prone to any one kind of cancer, but they can get it, along with heart disease & other types of organ failure, just like anyone. I've probably seen more really elderly dachshunds than almost any other breed of dog. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Around 8 years old is average for most diseases to start showing up. Back problems are the #1 problem we see with these guys and that can happen at any age. Usually happens due to obesity so keep him lean! The other huge issue is their teeth. They have horrible teeth in general and all that tartar buildup can contribute to other health issues like heart and kidney disease. My recommendations: 1) Take him to your vet for yearly check-ups and senior blood testing 2) Keep him lean 3) Keep his teeth in good health That is all you have control over. What are the symptoms of a dachshund having invertebral disc disease? What do they do?
Some signs include a reluctance to jump, weakness in the rear legs, sudden urinary and/or bowel incontinence, reduced appetite, reduced activity, and muscle spasms down the back. If you see any of those signs, have Oscar seen by a vet right away. Best of luck.

Two main things i would be suspecting, the first being a uterine infection which is an emergency situation, if this will be diagnosed she will need to have an emergency surgery done in the next 48 hours. the other possibility is IVDD (vertebral disk disease) which will require intensive medical treatment for pain as well as cage rest. you must take her to the vet ASAP.

what cant I let my dachshund not do? And how can I prevent him from getting an injury on his spine or neck since they’re a special kind of breed?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Being aware of IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) when you have a dachshund is very important. Pet insurance is also a very good idea. To decrease the risk of spinal injury/disease you should try to avoid jumping (up/down couches, into cars, etc.), however most times the injury occurs due to the formation of the spine, and this can only be prevented by not breeding dogs to be short and long. With Bow, this isn't an option for this life. Dogs often will become injured just walking, and cannot be prevented, so if he does get an injury don't feel bad, there likely was nothing you could have done to prevent it. You should be aware of the signs of spinal disease, and also be aware that early treatment carries a much better prognosis. Any signs of walking wobbly, dragging back feet, hunched back, reluctance to walk up/down stairs, or signs of paralysis, don't wait, and go to a vet right away. Hello, and thanks for your question. Regular preventative care, exams with your veterinarian, and maintaining a healthy body weight are the most important things to keeping a dog healthy! Keeping Oscar up to date on vaccines, heartworm prevention, and flea & tick prevention will go a long way towards protecting him from infectious diseases. Routine prophylactic dental care under anesthesia will help keep him more comfortable and prevent oral infections - your vet can help guide how often this should be done, as it differs a bit from one dog to another but most dogs benefit from having this done annually. If Oscar hasn't had bloodwork done recently, that's a great way to detect disease processes early rather than waiting until he's sick or symptomatic. Arthritis is common in aging dogs, and your vet can evaluate if Oscar would benefit from joint protection supplements or pain medication to keep him comfortable. You can ask all the questions you want! Bloat commonly occurs between the age of 7-12, but younger dogs can get it. You can prevent it by having a surgery done called a gastropexy, which is where the outer layer of the stomach is stitched onto the rib cage, preventing it from ever rotating. Hello! My vet said he thinks my dog my be bow legged on the back legs and would need to take x-rays to be sure. I am wondering what being bow legged could mean for my dog? He's almost 2, long haired dachshund 14 lbs.
Wow, Rowan is such a cute boy! As I'm sure you know Dachshunds have a genetic trait that causes them to have disproportionately short legs. This can lead to problems with the bones, joints and cartilage in the dog. Most notably, dachshunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (like a buldging disc in their spine) that can cause loss of motor function and can be painful. Bowed legs can also be common in this breed. X-rays would be helpful to assess the hips and knees and to look for any signs of early onset arthritis. The X-rays would also be helpful in determining whether or not surgical intervention is needed. I would also recommend starting Rowan on a joint supplement such as Dasuquin to help keep his joints as healthy as possible. Rowan will likely develop arthritis because of his legs at some point in his life but if you start joint supplementation now and keep him nice and trim, it can help delay the onset of arthritis.
