My foster dog has pustules. Is it a yeast infection or mites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 10 lbs

Hi I'm fostering a dog from our local shelter. She was picked by or animal control officer and taken immediately to the vet. She had a few puncture wounds on her head and neck caused by we assume another dig attacking her. The wounds were treated and she has been on antibiotics (clindamycin) for 3 days now along with ketoconazole. My concern is not her wounds but pustules she has all over her. I've been told it is a yeast infection. I was instructed to bathe her every other day with Malaseb.

Yeast and bacterial infections could both potentially cause pustules like this but they are a little unusual. It might be a good idea for her to see the vet again if you are seeing new lesions in the face of treatment to make sure she doesn't have an underlying disease that has caused these secondary infections. I would also want to make sure mites have been ruled out.
