Why does my Shih Tzu have flaky skin and hair loss on her back?

The most common cause for hair loss and itching in this particular area is flea allergies. I would recommend that you have Shi Shi examined by a vet. The vet will examine all of her skin and discuss her medical history. The vet may need to take a sample of the skin for examination under the microscope. Congratulations on adding Roxy to your family! The most important thing you can do is keep her on a good flea preventative such as Simparica or Nexgard. Adding an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for dogs to her diet can also help. If the itching continues, it’s possible she has underlying allergies and I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. Best of luck.
