Is my puppy's black, tarry stool from blood or amoxicillin meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Female | 8 months and 27 days old | 2.3 lbs

Does my puppy have blood in her stool? Per my post yesterday she was vomiting from what is thought to be an adverse reaction to amoxicillin prescribed for an ear infection. Her still is usually firm light or dark brown. She has stopped meds and fed chicken broth rice for 24 hours. Her stool has gone from black brown solid to blackish tarry pictured.

I don’t think this looks like melena, or digested blood in the stool, but it can be difficult to tell from a photo. Melena is very black and sometimes has a greenish tint. If Lemon Drop still seems sick you should have her examined by your vet.
