My cats have colds but are eating. Should I worry or disinfect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 8 lbs

Both my cats have all their vaccines, but they both now have a cold. My oldest is improving, and my youngest (1 yr old) is just starting the cold. Personalities are normal and playful, they’re both eating/drinking water. Is there OTC vitamins to help the cold run its course faster? Should I disinfect my entire house? Should I be worried? Thank you.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is not uncommon for cats to have herpesvirus latent in their bodies that flares up every now and then. As long as they are continuing to act normal otherwise (eating/drinking/urinating/defecating normally), I would let the signs run their course. You do not need to disinfect your house. I would not be worried unless you start to see any other unusual signs such as hiding, not eating, or coughing. I hope this is helpful!
