Why is my dog screaming, running, and now shaking? Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 7 yrs old shih tzu's terrier mix. He just woke up screaming and started running around the house screaming. He went out to pee and seemed fine. Now he's laying in my arms in bed and it shaky.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend that he sees an emergency veterinarian today. Screaming and shaking typically represent pain in dogs. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. The muscles lining the spine can spasm causing excruciating pain. In more severe cases, a bulging or swollen disc can place pressure on the spinal cord creating neurological problems. Of course, there are other causes of pain. His veterinarian will examine him carefully and direct you on treatment based on these results. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
