Pregnant stray cat returned without kittens. When can I take her in?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Bobtail Shorthair | Female | unspayed

I've been taking care of a stray cat that turned out to be pregnant. She disappeared and then came back 3 Days Later really skinny I'm really hungry with no kittens around. I was planning on taking the cat in before all this happened but I'm wondering if I should wait just in case they're still kittens out there. The other issue is that I live in the desert and we have lots of coyotes and other things that are hungry and I don't want anything to happen to this cat so what do you think

She may have had the kittens and left them someplace secure while she searches for food. You can continue to feed her for the next 6 weeks or so. You may see the kittens before then. If so, you can choose to take them all in. Leaving her out puts her at risk of harm, but taking her in before her kittens are weaned puts them at risk. It is a difficult situation.
