My lab puppy has green eye discharge. What over-the-counter can I use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 6 days old | 17 lbs

My 7 month old lab always has a little bit of eye buggers ,lol, however I notice today one eye is weeping greenish mucous and a little more than usual. Is there anything over the counter I can do? I held a warm compress on it a couple of times and she seemed to like it.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A warm compress once a day, especially if Harley likes it, is not a bad idea. You can also purchase artificial tears such as Refresh Celluvisc eye drops over the counter to help lubricate the eyes too. If you notice that the mucoid discharge continues for longer than 1-2 days, or if Harley begins squinting her eye shut, I recommend having Harley seen by your veterinarian. An infection could be present, which requires antibiotic eye medications that have to be purchased from a veterinarian's office. If the discharge resolves in this time, she will likely be OK! I hope this is helpful!
