My cat after blockage & catheter: Incontinent, lethargic, disoriented?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 16.5 lbs

What are the side effects of urethral catheterization and Prazosin in cats? Our cat had a blockage and was catheterized yesterday morning. We brought him home last night and now he is incontinent, lethargic and disoriented. The vet said to wait it out, but gave no timeline.

Temporary Incontinence is very common following relief of obstruction and tends to resolve over 10-14days. The reasons why are poorly understood but seem to be related to muscle weakness and poor nerve control as well as an increase in urine production following kidney insult and tends to improve gradually.
