Found a sick wild bird in the road. What should I do to help?

Question

I spotted what I believe was a sick wild finch, just sitting in the middle of a one-way road. I was walking home from work. It was not chirping or moving, just puffed & sitting. Before I could move it, a grey BMW came flying aorund the corner and . . well, end of little guy's story. What would you have done should I run into same situation again? Unfortunately, sometimes things just happen. While its extremely thoughtful and kind of you to wonder if you could have or should have done something differently, you can't and shouldn't risk your own life by diving in front of a moving car to save a bird who was likely sick. The bird probably was quite ill if it was just sitting in road and didn't get out of the way. Thank you for your concern for this little bird, but please don't be upset about it.
