Is my dog choking or struggling in her inflatable cone after spay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Setter | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 28 lbs

Is it possible for my dog to choke on an inflatable cone? She’s wearing it to keep her from licking her incision since she was spayed a day ago. She was just asleep then started dry heaving, and she was bleeding from her mouth which made me think she just bit down too hard trying to breathe.

I am sorry we weren't able to get to your question sooner. Its possible that the cone is too tight. She may have bit her tongue or lip leading to the bleeding, though. Loosen the cone to the point that you can comfortably but snugly get 2 fingers between the cone and the skin of the neck. if she has had any continued coughing, or if she seems to be struggling at all to breathe, please don't delay, get her to the vet immediately. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
