My dog keeps biting a red, raw spot on his skin. Is it a hot spot?

So thunder is shedding really bad right now, I don’t think that’s uncommon right now so I’m not worried about that but I am worried about him biting the same spot over and over, it’s red and it looks like he may have broken some skin. It’s been going on for about a month now. I’ve tried rubbing coconut oil on it but it hasn’t gone away. There have not been any black things on it so I don’t think it’s ticks. But we do live in Florida so maybe a mosquito bite but I don’t think itd last this long?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like Thunder may have a "hot spot", or an area of moist dermatitis. I recommend putting an Elizabethan collar (cone collar) on him at all times to prevent him from being able to lick at this area. A superficial bacterial infection is likely present, but these often clear up on their own when a dog is not able to lick. If the spot does not resolve, he should be seen by a veterinarian for a dermatologic (skin) exam. Please do not put any more coconut oil or other ointments/creams on the area, as this can delay healing. I hope this is helpful!
